October is National Cyber Security month and the Information and Communications Council (ICTC) and MediaSmarts, in partnership with Encounters Canada and Hive Toronto, are bringing together industry leaders, compelling speakers, and 200 secondary school students for 2 days of engagement on Digital Literacy, Cyber Citizenship and Cyber Security.
Digital Literacy is the ability to locate, organize, understand, and analyze information using digital technology. It’s also about knowing what to share and who to share it with. Considering the importance placed on digital literacy in many career roles, young Canadians, in particular, need digital literacy skills to support their health and well-being, their understanding of the world around them, their future economic outcomes, and their ability to contribute to society in significant and meaningful ways.
Day one of the Summit “Cyber-Citizens” will bring together senior secondary students from across Canada to talk about the skills they need to be digitally literate citizens and the challenges and barriers they face in acquiring these skills. The discussion will include special issues faced by diverse, and often marginalized, young people.
Day two of the Summit “Cyber Security in Action” will see secondary students from the Ottawa region come together for hands-on, interactive learning about the cyber security threats we are facing and the skills needed to safeguard our privacy and protect the integrity of Canadian companies and governments.
By teaching kids to be truly digitally literate, we can keep them safe online, while helping to ensure their success in this digital world we live in.
