Welcome to the MediaSmarts’ website, home to one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of digital and media literacy resources. This section is intended to introduce you to our organization and our work.

MediaSmarts is a Canadian not-for-profit charitable organization for digital and media literacy. Our vision is that children, youth and trusted adults have the critical thinking skills to engage with media as active and informed digital citizens.

MediaSmarts has been developing digital and media literacy programs and resources for Canadian homes, schools and communities since 1996. Through our work we support adults with information and tools so they can help children and teens develop the critical thinking skills they need for interacting with the media they love.

MediaSmarts (formerly known as Media Awareness Network) came out of a TV violence initiative launched by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in the early 1990s.

For over 20 years MediaSmarts has been producing award-winning resources and programs. This section showcases the recognition we have received for our work.

Read our annual reports to learn about MediaSmarts’ achievements in promoting and supporting digital and media literacy in Canada.

MediaSmarts is governed by an elected, volunteer Board of Directors, which includes representatives of leading media companies and stakeholder sectors, including education, libraries, and community and youth-serving organizations.

We are honoured that the Governor General of Canada is a Patron of MediaSmarts.
