Gender differences

Studies about the gendered aspects of sexting consistently show that while little criticism is attached to boys who send sexts, girls who do so are perceived as being sexually immoral: girls who sext are seen as using their sexuality to get public attention, while boys – even if their sexts become public – are assumed to be doing it only to get the attention of one prospective partner. [1]

Young Canadians in a Wired World, Phase III: Trends and Recommendations

This is the final report in a series of nine from the Young Canadian in a Wired World: Phase III study. The Trends and Recommendations report brings together the findings from interviews with children, teens, parents and teachers and a national survey of students in grades 4 to 11, which took place between 2012 and 2013. It offers recommendations for parents, teachers and policy makers to support young people in meeting the challenges of growing up in the digital age. It also includes an analysis of students’ top 50 favourite websites and profiles of students’ online activities organized by grade.

Young Canadians need less surveillance and more mentorship online

National study highlights the important role of adults in kids’ online lives. A new report released by MediaSmarts, Canada’s centre for digital and media literacy, calls on parents, teachers and policy makers to support young Canadians in meeting the challenges of growing up in the digital age.

It might sound a little strange at a time when many of us are struggling to convince our own children to put down their devices and consume less screen time, but there it is.
