Overall Expectations:

GCO 1 Civic Engagement: students will be expected to demonstrate the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a diverse democratic society in an interdependent world

Audio Media: Introduction 

Audio media, such as music and podcasts, share the power to communicate deeply and personally with listeners, often using sound and words to tell stories and set moods. Both forms have been fundamentally changed by digital technology, which has made content abundant and accessible, mainly through mobile devices and streaming. These digital changes mean that algorithms and platform rules are now major forces in deciding what listeners discover and consume.

This activity helps teenagers develop an awareness of marketing tactics aimed at teens.

Social and Emotional Health: Self-Awareness     

GCO 2 Identify and monitor one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviours.

2.3.1 Develop and use an emotion vocabulary

2.3.2 Recognize and accurately label one’s emotions

2.3.3 Recognize they can have more than one emotion at a time

2.3.4 Recognize factors that affect one’s emotions and thoughts

2.3.5 Recognize how emotions physically feel and present in one’s body

Family Guidelines for New Tech Devices

MediaSmarts’ research has shown that kids with rules in the home about tech use are less likely to do things like post their contact information, visit gambling or pornography sites and talk to strangers online. Having a family agreement or set of rules for using devices is also a great way for parents and kids to work together on how to be safe, wise and responsible online.
