New Brunswick - Personal Wellness 5

Strand: Wellness

Big Idea: Healthy Lifestyle

Skill Descriptor:

Assess personal health habits and their relationship to wellness.

Achievement Indicators:

Assess the effects of personal screen time

Connect personal habits to health and well-being

Social Studies 6-8

Social Studies learners in the Middle Block “engage in participatory citizenship and explore civics in their region and around the globe including elections, the democratic process, and civic engagement” along with issues of representation and rights. Specific content focuses on civic engagement, cultural systems and youth rights.

Social Studies 3-5

At this level, Social Studies “develops skills to ask questions about who decides what is significant enough to be studied, represented, and commemorated; how we know what we know; and what has changed and what has stayed the same.”

Connections to digital media literacy largely fall within the Civics strand, which focuses on government and governance and the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizens.

New Brunswick - Social Studies 7

Strand: Civics

Big Idea: Rights and Responsibilities

Skill Descriptor:

Examine selected issues relating to human rights legislation around the world.

Achievement Indicators:

Give examples of rights included in the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child, the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

Outline selected examples of current human rights violations

Strand: Civics

Big Idea: Civic Engagement

Skill Descriptor:

Take age-appropriate actions to demonstrate an understanding of responsibilities as global citizens.

Achievement Indicators:

    Assess perspectives on a contemporary local, national, or international issue

    Identify the historical roots of a selected issue

    Compare with examples of empowerment and disempowerment discussed in this course

English Language Arts 3-5

In the Elementary Block, English Language Arts learners “develop their ability to find information they are looking for, they begin to support their opinions and perspectives.

Skill Descriptor:

Describe and discuss thoughts, feelings, experiences, ideas, and opinions.

Achievement Indicators:

    Describe emotions, personal experiences, and situations with details

    Discuss thoughts and feelings with others providing examples of experiences

    Use descriptive language to express personal ideas and opinions

Use complete sentences and/or full thoughts to make a point

English Language Arts 6-8

English Language Learners in the Middle Block “get to know themselves and others and use language to understand and navigate their world” and “engage with a variety of text forms, genres, and modes.” Specific expectations involve communicating effectively and persuasively, evaluating and responding, communicating using technology, and analyzing media critically.
