In the High School Block, “the concepts Create, Connect and Communicate are central to learning in and through creative arts.” Learners at this level “develop confidence as performers and creators; develop understanding of the role of the arts in society and its power to effect change [and] practice respect for varying opinions and tastes.”

Strand: Create

Big Idea: Exploration and Technique

Skill Descriptor:

Select and experiment with materials and techniques to support decisions about art making practice.    

Achievement Indicators:

Consistently and independently apply elements of art and principles of design through artwork created.

Independently choose media for expressing personal creative ideas.

Manipulate media in unique ways to express creative ideas.

New Brunswick - Visual Arts 11

Strand: Create

Big Idea: Exploration and Technique

Skill Descriptor:

Select and experiment with materials and techniques to support decisions about art making practice.    

Achievement Indicators:

Apply elements of art and principles of design through artwork created.

Demonstrate increasing complexity in use of elements of art and principles of design through artwork created.

Manipulate art materials to express ideas.

Visual Arts 3 to 5

In the Elementary Block, Visual Arts students “develop the ability to collaborate and can respectfully share ideas and impressions of artwork created by others” and learn that “their art is an expression of their experience, ideas, and identity.” Students “Experiment with a variety of genres and technologies, develop skills to support making art in a specific medium,” and “connect the ways visual art is important to communication, history and understanding each other.”

Big Idea: Exploration and Process

Skill Descriptor:

Analyze elements of art and principles of design to develop skills, language, techniques, and processes.   

Achievement Indicators:

Create imagery that demonstrates an understanding of the elements of art and principles of design

Define contour and demonstrate how it creates a shape

Illustrate form using a variety of techniques and materials

Strand: Create

Big Idea: Application and Product

Skill Descriptor:

Create and present expressive work in visual arts for a range of audiences and purposes using a variety of art media including technology.   

Achievement Indicators:

Create works of art using identified media and corresponding techniques

Create artworks based on a response to a variety of art styles

Communicate personal meaning through artwork

Strand: Create

Skill Descriptor:

Create and present expressive work in visual arts for a range of audiences and purposes using a variety of art media including technology.   

Achievement Indicators:

Create representations of a variety of subjects with a focus on careful observation

Create art for a variety of reasons, including responses to music and literature
