Keeping up to date with all of the latest technologies and trends in the media is exhausting, and it’s easy to fall behind. Our team at MediaSmarts conducts regular research, works with media networks, and follows current events to stay relevant. Both parents and teachers look to us for information and education materials.

Back to school – cell phone free

My two oldest kids started grades 10 and 11 in September. As usual, they took their smartphones with them the first day.

When they arrived home, I asked them how their classes had went, and they said that every single class had talked about the Ontario government’s new policy about cell phones in school – that is, that cell phones are to be used only for educational purposes, or health or special needs, during class time.

In this lesson, students learn that AI tools are computer programs that follow patterns instead of thinking like humans. They explore how this can lead AIs to make mistakes and importance of having humans supervise and correct them. Students practice creating “robot rules” and then design a "Trashbot" that will recognize and pick up trash in the classroom.
