Science Overview

The New Brunswick Science curriculum connects with digital and media literacy through attitudes "that support the responsible acquisition and application of scientific and technological knowledge to the mutual benefit of self, society and the environment." Relevant expectations are found in the attitudes of Appreciation of Science, Interest in Science, and Scientific Inquiry.

Health Education

In the Nova Scotia Health Education curriculum, media literacy outcomes are included under the general outcomes requiring students to think critically and make informed decisions to enhance health of self, those around oneself, and to demonstrate within a global context and effective communication and interpersonal skills that facilitate positive relationships between themselves and the world.

Mathematics

In Alberta, the following strands in the Mathematics curriculum have connections to digital and media literacy:

More than Just Disasters: Shedding Light on Global Development and the Media

Media Awareness Network creates new educational resources on media and global issues

Ottawa, May 21, 2008 - Media Awareness Network (MNet) is marking World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development with the release of a new series of lessons for students in Grades 7-12. The lessons, which were funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and are available free on MNet's Web site, offer young people a better understanding of how media portrayals affect our view of global development issues.

Ontario Digital Media Literacy Textbooks

MediaSmarts has developed four online multimedia textbooks to support the Ontario curriculum for Language 1-8 and English 9. These freely available textbooks are designed to give educators flexibility in meeting both the Overall Expectation relating to Digital Media Literacy (A2) but also related Overall and Specific Expectations in the A, C and D strands, including Critical Thinking in Texts; Creating Drafts; and Publishing, Presenting and Reflecting.

Gender Messages in Alcohol Advertising

In this lesson, students think critically about culturally inherited gender stereotypes, and explore how stereotypes about men and women are promoted and reinforced through the images and messages in alcohol ads. In the first half of the lesson, students discuss the nature of gender stereotypes, common male and female stereotypes, and where these stereotypes come from. Students also explore why adolescents are a particularly vulnerable group when it comes to stereotypes about gender and gender relationships. In the second half, students view and discuss alcohol ads that integrate gender stereotypes into messaging about drinking.

Privacy Rights of Children and Teens

In this lesson, students are introduced to the privacy principles that inform the Alberta and BC Personal Information Protection Acts, Québec’s An Act Respecting the Protection of Personal Information in the Private Sector and the students’ federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) relating to personal information collection online. They learn ways to find out what personal information may or has been collected by platforms that they use, how to limit data collection about themselves, and the various forms of recourse that are available to them if they feel an organization is not respecting their rights.
