The comics industry

The comics industry is currently experiencing a period of immense transformation and expansion, marked by surging sales, rapid digital disruption and a dramatic diversification of readership and content. Far from the niche market it was decades ago, today's industry is a global one where new technologies and distribution methods are reshaping how stories are created, circulated and consumed.

French Immersion Language Arts

The British Columbia Français langue seconde – Immersion program aims “to motivate all students to become educated citizens capable of questioning the world around them.”

Music

In the New Brunswick Music curriculum, media and digital literacy outcomes mostly fall under Strand 2, Understanding and Connecting Contexts of Time, Place and Community, and Strand 3, Perceiving, Reflecting and Responding. Digital citizenship habits skills are also found in General Curriculum Outcome 4, “Students will be expected to respect the contributions to the arts of individuals and cultural groups in local and global contexts, and value the arts as a record of human experience and expression.”

Helping Kids Build Safe and Smart Digital Habits

There are four main strategies to help kids become resilient to online risks. We can:

Curate our kids’ media experiences;

Control who can access our kids and their data;

Co-view media with our kids;

and be our kids’ media Coaches.

The Privacy Dilemma

In this lesson students learn the ways that the apps they use are designed to encourage them to share more information—both with other users and with the apps themselves. They are then introduced to the idea of persuasive design or “dark patterns” and investigate whether these are used to make it more difficult to opt out of data collection on popular apps. Finally, the class creates a “rogues’ gallery” to help them identify dark patterns when they encounter them.

New program to address bias and hate in media

Ottawa March 28, 2012 – Media Awareness Network (MNet) today launched a new suite of digital and media literacy resources to help educate young people about how media representations can negatively influence how we view certain groups in society.

New Guide Helps Communities Fight Hate on the Internet

Ottawa, March 29, 2012 – A Responding to Online Hate guide was released today by Media Awareness Network (MNet) to assist law enforcement, community groups and educators in countering hateful content on the Internet. Despite the growth in online hate and the fact that four out of five Canadians are online, there is currently little information available to the public on this topic: which lead MNet, Canada’s leading digital and media literacy organization, to develop the guide.
