Media Literacy Should Start Early – And Last A Lifetime

They are mediatized, certainly, even before they are born: it’s a rare baby shower that doesn’t feature Elsa or Elmo in one form or another. As for digital literacy, kids take to devices like the proverbial ducks to water, quickly becoming expert at finding the videos and games they want.

National Media Education Week 2007 Kicks Off with an "e-Parenting" Theme

November 5, 2007 - (Ottawa) Media Awareness Network (MNet) and the Canadian Teachers' Federation (CTF) today hosted the opening ceremonies for National Media Education Week 2007 in Ottawa. The goal of the week is to encourage and promote media literacy in Canadian homes, schools and communities.

The house hippo returns to tackle AI this Media Literacy Week

October 21, 2024 –  MediaSmarts has brought back the house hippo – this time to address the rise of AI-generated deepfakes and to encourage everyone to check the information they see online before they share it.

Digital literacy is a vital tool for education, employment and economic participation, civic engagement, and even health and wellness. It reinforces existing inequalities based on socioeconomic status, ethnicity, education, immigration status and gender. Given the importance of digital literacy skills to under-represented populations, MediaSmarts and YWCA Canada have partnered to develop and deliver DigitalSmarts, a digital literacy skills program.
