English Language Arts 7-9 Overview

Each Atlantic Province follows closely the Atlantic Provinces Education Foundation Framework for English Language Arts. In this Framework, media literacy is integrated throughout the English Language Arts curriculum under the general learning outcomes of Speaking and Listening, Reading and Viewing and Writing and Other Ways of Representing.

The following excerpt from Atlantic Canada English Language Arts Curriculum, Grades 7-9, details how media education has been integrated into the Atlantic curriculum.

Outcome Chart - Saskatchewan - English Language Arts 7

This outcome chart contains media-related learning outcomes from the Saskatchewan, Grade 7 English Language Arts curriculum, with links to supporting resources on the MediaSmarts site.

In the elementary curriculum in Saskatchewan, learning objectives for media studies are included as a category within the supporting domain, Oracy and Literacy: Media. Media-related objectives can also be found within Speaking and Listening, Reading and Response to Literature, Writing, Educational Drama, Research and Presentation and Computer Applications.

  • Learners will communicate effectively and clearly respecting cultural contexts.

Specific Expectations:

  • Explain ideas and opinions with supporting details, and respond to others’ questions and ideas.

Learning Outcome: Students examine roles, responsibilities, and self-regulation and their connections to self-understanding.

GCO 1: Students will speak and listen to explore, clarify, extend and reflect on their thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences

Specific Expectations

1.1 discuss personal experiences with supporting detail
1.2 use active listening strategies for a variety of purposes
1.3 use various types of questions to explore information and ideas
1.5 reflect upon a variety of oral texts to share personal perspectives

MediaSmarts Launches New Online Course for Teachers

OTTAWA – MediaSmarts, Canada’s not-for-profit centre for digital literacy, has launched a new free, self-directed online course for in-service and pre-service teachers and other educators. Making Media Across the Curriculum will provide training and resources to incorporate digital media production such as games, film, and animation in their classrooms from kindergarten to Grade 12 and across the curriculum.
