Study shows Canadian teachers very positive about technology in their classrooms, while facing challenges to successful implementation

Ottawa (March 24, 2016) – As part of its ongoing study Young Canadians in a Wired World, MediaSmarts, Canada's centre for digital and media literacy, partnered with the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF) and its Member organizations to survey online more than 4,000 teachers across Canada about technology use in their classrooms.

Body image – Digital media

Digital media such as social networks and video games have become increasingly important in the lives of children and youth. Even when young people are consuming other media, such as TV, music and movies, they’re likely to be doing it through the internet. As well, nearly all the media they consume, from TV shows to toys, have web pages, virtual worlds, video games or other digital spinoffs associated with them.

MediaSmarts and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF) are today launching Media Literacy Week (October 7 to 11) with teachers and students, libraries and museums, and community groups across the country engaging in activities that encourage Canadians to “Break the Fake” and check information they see online before sharing it.

Young Canadians in a Wired World, Phase III: Life Online

This report is drawn from a national survey of Canadian youth conducted by MediaSmarts in 2013. The classroom-based survey of 5,436 students in Grades 4 through 11, in every province and territory, examined the role of networked technologies in young people’s lives. Life Online (the first in series of reports from the survey) focuses on what youth are doing online, what sites they’re going to, their attitudes towards online safety, household rules on Internet use, and unplugging from digital technologies.
