Digital Citizenship

Outcome 1: Students will be expected to demonstrate safe routines for using ICT responsibly, ensuring their own and others’ health and safety

Outcome 2: Students will be expected to use information and communication technology appropriately and responsibly, with teacher assistance, to address opportunities for the development of active local and global citizenship.

Outcome 3: Students will be expected to articulate the need to take care in providing personal information online, and share personal information only with teacher approval.

Online Sexual Predators

The nature of online sexual exploitation is widely misunderstood: “Instead of pedophiles (ie individuals with sexual interests in children) preying on young children, most Internet-initiated sex crimes involve young adults (mostly men) who target and seduce teenagers into sexual encounters.” Similarly, child sexual abuse material is most frequently produced by victims’ family members, with fathers being the single most common perpetrators. Even in cases of sextortion, 60 percent of youth who are victims know the perpetrators offline.

Putting together the online privacy puzzle: a parent’s perspective

When I was growing up, the issue of privacy was limited to eavesdropping on phone calls and making sure the key to my diary was well hidden. As a parent raising kids in a media age, the word has taken on a whole new meaning. I think that as a family of active netizens, it’s imperative that we - and our kids - understand the issues surrounding online privacy.
