In this lesson, students will learn about the concept of branded content and will learn to differentiate between branded images and videos and non-branded images and videos in online and offline contexts through a series of questions and discussions.

This lesson looks at the ways in which online gambling draws in youth and increases the risk that they will become problem gamblers.

In the Nova Scotia Science curriculum, digital and media literacy expectations fall under the general curriculum outcome of Science, Technology, Society and the Environment (STSE). These include "the skills required for scientific and technological inquiry, for solving problems, for communicating scientific ideas and results, for working collaboratively, and for making informed decisions" and " attitudes that support the responsible acquisition and application of scientific and technological knowledge to the mutual benefit of self, society, and the environment."

The last few weeks have shed an unprecedented light on the use of digital media to spread and inspire hatred. Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, the perpetrator in the attacks on Canada’s National War Memorial and Parliament buildings, appears to have been motivated in part by exposure to online postings by a self-described member of the Islamic state[1], and the Federal government has already stated that it intends to create tools to remove online content that promotes the “proliferation of terrorism.”[2]


Montreal, December 4, 2012 – Laurier Macdonald High School in St. Leonard joined with schools across Quebec at an event to launch Media Literacy Week 2012. Students had the opportunity to talk with a panel of experts about online privacy as part of this year’s theme Privacy Matters.
