Social Studies Grades Overview

In the Saskatchewan Social Studies curriculum, digital media literacy is found in outcomes including Interactions and Independence, Dynamic Relationships, Power and Authority and Resources and Wealth.

Visual Arts 4-6

In the Nova Scotia Visual Arts curriculum, media literacy outcomes are included under the general outcomes requiring students to demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of art as a lifelong process.

(Note: as many of our lessons can be adapted to suit different grade levels, specific lessons may be listed for more than one grade. Teachers should also note that individual lessons often satisfy a number of learning outcomes.)

Film and Video Production

According to the Nova Scotia Department of Education document “Film and Video Production 12” (2003), “Film and Video Production is one of a group of innovative multidisciplinary course options that… draw from and contribute to students’ knowledge and skills in more than one discipline. Students synthesize and apply knowledge and skills acquired in other courses, including courses in English language arts, social studies, sciences, visual and performing arts, mathematics and technology… Film and Video Production 12 curriculum provides opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of the role of the arts in their community and the economy.” 

The Internet, surveillance, and privacy

Canada is a highly connected country: 96 percent of us have access to the internet. As technologies have improved to allow corporations, law enforcement and others to gather information and monitor activities online, media reports about violations or breaches of privacy are more and more frequent.

At its core, news is defined by what’s considered newsworthy, a criterion that has evolved over time. Traditionally, a story is deemed newsworthy if it’s unusual, as encapsulated by Jesse Lynch Williams’ adage "a dog bites a man, that's a story; a man bites a dog, that's a good story.”

Specific Expectations:

CM 1.2 produce an original body of artwork that integrates information from a variety of sources to convey personal meaning

CM 1.3 create artwork that communicates intentions

Research and Evaluation - Our Approach

Through a community-based research approach, our projects honour participants’ diverse range of digital media literacy strengths, experiences and expertise. We design projects that create safe spaces for participants to share their thoughts, experiences, concerns and solutions about digital media literacy issues. We aim to empower participants by providing them with knowledge and skills that they can take with them as they continue to navigate the online world and digital technology.
