Excessive media consumption may lead to sedentary lifestyle and risky sexual behaviour

Doctors urged to educate parents and children about healthy media habits 

CALGARY (June 19, 2003) - Media today play a powerful role in the lives of young Canadians. And health care professionals now know that in addition to positive implications, media consumption may also be linked to health issues such as sedentary lifestyle, poor nutrition, obesity, poor body image and low self-esteem, and even risky sexual behaviour.

OTTAWA, October 14, 2003 – Media Awareness Network (MNet) is pleased to announce that CHUM Television has increased its sponsorship support to the highest level – Gold Sponsor. The company also becomes the first corporate sponsor to enter into a multi-year sponsorship agreement with MNet.

Teaching youth about marketing and consumerism focus of Media Literacy Week 2013

Ottawa (March, 2013) MediaSmarts and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF) are pleased to announce that marketing and consumerism will be the focus of Canada’s eighth annual Media Literacy Week, to be held November 4-8, 2013.

The official theme of the week: “What’s Being Sold: Helping Kids Make Sense of Marketing Messages” , will encourage educators and parents to talk to children and teens about the marketing they encounter on a daily basis.
