Digital Media Literacy Workshops for the new Ontario Language Curriculum
MediaSmarts is excited to offer two free virtual digital media literacy professional workshops for educators thanks to funding from the Ontario Ministry of Education. These two new professional development workshops were developed to support the updated Grade 1-9 Language Curriculum in Ontario.
Interested educators can register for one or both of the workshops below:
Essential Digital Media Literacy (Language 1-8)

Length: 90 minutes

Essential Digital Media Literacy is a professional development workshop for elementary and middle school teachers, focusing on systematic digital media literacy instruction. It covers:
- Digital media literacy and its current role in the Ontario Language/Français 1-8 curriculum;
- activities and resources for meeting curricular outcomes relating to digital media literacy and critical thinking;
- appropriate content and activities for different grade levels;
- best practices for media education;
- integrating media literacy into classroom practice and how to scaffold and individualize units, lessons and activities;
Participants will engage in quizzes and activities and receive a certificate upon completion. All these strategies are designed to be integrated with three new sourcebooks and textbooks developed by MediaSmarts.
Navigating Digital Media Literacy (Secondary school teachers - Language 9)

Navigating Digital Media Literacy is a professional development workshop for secondary school teachers, focusing on systematic digital media literacy instruction. It covers:
- Digital media literacy and its current role in the Ontario Language/Français 9 curriculum;
- activities and resources for meeting curricular outcomes relating to digital media literacy and critical thinking;
- appropriate content and activities for different grade levels;
- best practices for media education;
- integrating media literacy into classroom practice and how to scaffold and individualize units, lessons and activities.
This workshop is designed to be integrated with the new Navigating Digital Media Literacy textbook created by MediaSmarts. The workshop will include knowledge-check quizzes and a participatory activity, and participants will receive a professional development certificate in teaching digital media literacy at the secondary level.
