Media Awareness Network Marks Safer Internet Day with New Tools to Address Cyber Bullying in Canadian Classrooms

Ottawa, February 10, 2009 – Media Awareness Network (MNet) today launched the classroom resource Cyber Bullying: Encouraging Ethical Online Behaviour to meet the growing need for educational materials that address the issue of cyber bullying in Canadian schools. The launch coincides with Safer Internet Day—an international event to promote safe and responsible use of online technology and mobile phones among children and young people.

“A lot goes into media. What do you take out?” New campaign launches with National Media Education Week

Ottawa, November 20, 2006 – Media Awareness Network (MNet) and the Canadian Teachers' Federation (CTF) today launched the first ever National Media Education Week. The week, which runs from November 19 to 24, 2006, encourages the integration and the practice of media education in Canadian homes, schools and communities. A new multi-media public service campaign to promote media literacy will ask viewers, listeners and readers to consider what messages and meaning they take out of media.

Media Literacy Should Start Early – And Last A Lifetime

Matthew JohnsonParents could be forgiven for thinking that our children are born media literate. They are mediatized, certainly, even before they are born: it’s a rare baby shower that doesn’t feature Elsa or Elmo in one form or another. As for digital literacy, kids take to devices like the proverbial ducks to water, quickly becoming expert at finding the videos and games they want.

Body image and social media: Escaping the comparison trap

In this lesson, students consider the ways in which social media may prompt them to compare themselves with others, and the impacts that can have on body image and self-esteem. They analyze how the features, algorithms and culture of the social networks they use may affect them and will produce “paper prototypes” of redesigned social media apps that promote more healthful use. Finally, students reflect on how they can change how they use the existing apps to be more like their redesigned versions.
