English Language Arts 7-9 Overview

The 7-9 English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum integrates the six strands of language arts: reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing. The program encourages the study and creation of a wide variety of text types and forms, including oral, print, visual and multimedia formats.

Research and Evaluation - Our Approach

Through a community-based research approach, our projects honour participants’ diverse range of digital media literacy strengths, experiences and expertise. We design projects that create safe spaces for participants to share their thoughts, experiences, concerns and solutions about digital media literacy issues. We aim to empower participants by providing them with knowledge and skills that they can take with them as they continue to navigate the online world and digital technology.

Science

The  British Columbia Science curriculum has a number of expectations relating to digital and media literacy, primarily in connection with recognizing and correcting for bias, testing hypotheses, and using digital media for scientific investigation.

Video Games - Special Issues for Young Children

Throughout the elementary years, parents are the main gatekeepers for their children. As such, they need to be actively involved in their children’s video game playing – selecting the games, managing how much time children spend playing, and talking to them about the values in the games they like.

This outcome chart contains media-related learning outcomes from the Saskatchewan, Grade 2 English Language Arts curriculum, with links to supporting resources on the MediaSmarts site.

In the elementary curriculum in Saskatchewan, learning objectives for media studies are included as a category within the supporting domain, Oracy and Literacy: Media. Media-related objectives can also be found within Speaking and Listening, Reading and Response to Literature, Writing, Educational Drama, Research and Presentation and Computer Applications.

TELUS commits $75,000 to digital literacy skills for Canadian children

New platinum sponsorship of MediaSmarts will support research and education to tackle cyberbullying and other pressing issues

OTTAWA, June 6, 2018 – MediaSmarts, Canada’s centre for digital and media literacy, is pleased to welcome TELUS as a platinum sponsor with a $75,000 contribution. TELUS had previously sponsored the charitable organization at the silver ($30,000) level for many years.
