Computer Studies

Many curricular expectations in Ontario Computer Studies courses relate to media and digital literacy. The following excerpt from Computer Studies, Grades 10 to 12 (2008) detail how media and digital literacy have been integrated into the curriculum:

English Language Arts Grades 10-12

In Prince Edward Island, “English language arts encompasses the experience, study, and appreciation of language, literature, media, and communication.” The curriculum defines a text as “any language event, whether oral, written, visual, or digital. In this sense, a conversation, a poem, a novel, an online exchange, a poster, a music video, or a multimedia production are all considered texts.

Mathematics

Some curricular expectations in Newfoundland and Labrador Mathematics courses relate to media and digital literacy, mostly relating to statistics and probability.

Religions Education

Many curricular expectations in Newfoundland and Labrador Religious Education courses relate to media and digital literacy. The following excerpts from Ethics and Philosophy 2101 (2010) detail how media and digital literacy have been integrated into the curriculum:

Technology Education

Many curricular expectations in Newfoundland and Labrador Technology Education courses relate to media and digital literacy. Media and digital literacy have been integrated into the curriculum in the Essential Graduation Learnings of Aesthetic Expression, Citizenship, Communication, Personal Development, Technological Competence and Spiritual and Moral Development.

Social Studies Overview

Many curricular expectations in Newfoundland and Labrador Social Studies courses relate to media and digital literacy. Media and digital literacy skills can be found in General Curriculum Outcomes such as Citizenship, Power and Governance; Culture and Diversity; Individuals, Societies, and Economic Decisions; People, Place and Environment; and Time, Continuity and Change.

Applied Design, Skills and Technologies

In 2016, British Columbia launched a new  Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies curriculum which it describes as “an experiential, hands-on program of learning through design and creation that includes skills and concepts from traditional and First Peoples practice; from the existing disciplines of Business Education, Home Economics and Culinary Arts, Information and Communication Technology, and Technology Education; and from new and emerging fields.  It fosters the development of the skills and knowledge that will support students in developing practical, creative, and innovative responses to everyday needs and challenges.”

Career Education

The  British Columbia Career Education curriculum includes a number of media and digital literacy expectations in both the Curricular Competencies and Content, particularly relating to the Personal Development and Connections to Community strands.

Mathematics

The British Columbia Mathematics curriculum has a number of expectations relating to digital and media literacy, primarily in connection with financial literacy and probability. Select a grade level under Mathematics for a list of media-related outcomes and links to supporting resources from the MediaSmarts site. (Note: as many of our lessons can be adapted to suit different grade levels, specific lessons may be listed for more than one grade.
