Getting the Goods: Finding and Evaluating Science and Health Information

Because most of us aren’t experts on these topics, we rely on people and organizations who are experts for good information. This report is drawn from a national survey of Canadian youth conducted by MediaSmarts in 2013. The classroom-based survey of 5,436 students in grades 4 through 11, in every province and territory, examined the role of networked technologies in young people’s lives. Experts or Amateurs?

Young Canadians in a Wired World, Phase III: Trends and Recommendations

This is the final report in a series of nine from the Young Canadian in a Wired World: Phase III study. The Trends and Recommendations report brings together the findings from interviews with children, teens, parents and teachers and a national survey of students in grades 4 to 11, which took place between 2012 and 2013. It offers recommendations for parents, teachers and policy makers to support young people in meeting the challenges of growing up in the digital age. It also includes an analysis of students’ top 50 favourite websites and profiles of students’ online activities organized by grade.

Managing Media: Back to School Tips for Parents (2012)

The beginning of another school year is approaching quickly, and as it does many parents are beginning to wonder how they can help their kids ease out of summertime media habits. In addition to having to establish new rules for media use, parents may also face a barrage of requests and questions from their kids regarding digital technology, such as: Am I old enough to have a cell phone? Can I bring it to school? How about my iPod? What about Facebook -- all my friends are on it, I need it to talk to them about my homework!

Study shows Canadian teachers very positive about technology in their classrooms, while facing challenges to successful implementation

Ottawa (March 24, 2016) – As part of its ongoing study Young Canadians in a Wired World, MediaSmarts, Canada's centre for digital and media literacy, partnered with the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF) and its Member organizations to survey online more than 4,000 teachers across Canada about technology use in their classrooms. 

Racial and Cultural Diversity in The Newsroom

In the same way that Canadian news reporting does not reflect Canada’s multiculturalism, racial diversity ‘behind the scenes’ of news media is similarly disproportionate. Almost a quarter of the Canadian population identifies as a member of what Statistics Canada refers to as a “visible minority,” and while a 2021 study found a similar rate of representation in newsrooms, eight in ten Canadian newsrooms have no racialized journalists in leadership roles.

CIRA and Media Awareness Network Launch Guide to Avoiding Risks Online

April 4, 2011 (Ottawa) – The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA), in partnership with Media Awareness Network (MNet), is proud to introduce a Cyber Security Consumer Tip Sheet, a guide to avoiding risks online.

As the Internet has become a ubiquitous part of our daily lives, so too have the number and severity of potential risks we face each day. With increasing accessibility to digital technologies, Internet literacy programs are, now more than ever, essential to protecting Internet users and their computers.

Premiere of students' videos highlight digital citizenship at Media Literacy Week launch

November 7, 2011 (Ottawa) – Videos produced by Grade 3 students and teachers of Trillium Public School in Orleans were premiered earlier today at the launch of the 6th annual Media Literacy Week held by the Media Awareness Network (MNet) and the Canadian Teachers' Federation (CTF). The week runs Nov. 7 to 11. Thanks to the expert guidance of The Director's Cut, students and teachers at Trillium school were able to write, direct and produce the videos which focused on this year's theme.
