At its core, news is defined by what’s considered newsworthy, a criterion that has evolved over time. Traditionally, a story is deemed newsworthy if it’s unusual, as encapsulated by Jesse Lynch Williams’ adage "a dog bites a man, that's a story; a man bites a dog, that's a good story.”

In Ontario, media components are included throughout the Healthy Living Strand of the Health and Physical Education Curriculum, Grades 1-8.

Some curricular expectations in Newfoundland and Labrador Mathematics courses relate to media and digital literacy, mostly relating to statistics and probability.

The Manitoba Mathematics curriculum includes digital and media literacy expectations at several grade levels, mostly in connection with an representations of probability and statistics in the media.

The Saskatchewan Mathematics curriculum includes several courses with curriculum expectations that relate to digital and media literacy, primarily involving media representations of statistics and probability.

In Saskatchewan Health Education, media components are included under the broader categories of Understanding, Skills, and Confidences; Decision Making; and Action Planning.

The British Columbia Mathematics curriculum has a number of expectations relating to digital and media literacy, primarily in connection with financial literacy and probability. (Note: as many of our lessons can be adapted to suit different grade levels, specific lessons may be listed for more than one grade.

It’s important to note that there is no single profile of a child who bullies. While some fit the traditional image of someone who is generally aggressive and has poor impulse control, others may be very sensitive to social nuances and are able to use that understanding against their targets. Others may be motivated simply by boredom.
