Visual Arts

In Manitoba, media components are included in the Visual Arts curriculum in the Understanding Art in Context strand. The document The Arts in Education (2003) states, "The arts can help students become more deeply aware of their own lives and cultures and create a larger, more conscious context for the plethora of media images, sounds, and messages that surround us."

 

Health for Life 11

In the Ontario Grade 11 Health for Life curriculum, media literacy outcomes are included under the broader categories Determinants of Health and Community Health.

On the left you will find the outcome chart containing media-related learning expectations from the Health for Life curriculum, with links to supporting resources on the MediaSmarts site. Teachers should also note that individual lessons often satisfy a number of expectations.

Career Education

The Newfoundland career education curriculum includes expectations that incorporate media education themes. The curriculum document Career Development Intermediate (2012) includes a section that demonstrates the complementary relationship between media literacy and career education:

Health and Physical Education 1-8

In Ontario, media components are included throughout the Healthy Living Strand of the Health and Physical Education Curriculum, Grades 1-8.

Social Studies Grades Overview

Many of the Core Concepts of Social Studies Education K-12 in Saskatchewan relate to media education, such as Culture, Diversity, Identity, Technology and Values.

Mathematics

Some curricular expectations in Newfoundland and Labrador Mathematics courses relate to media and digital literacy, mostly relating to statistics and probability.

Canadian and World Studies, Grades 9-10

The Ontario Canadian and World Studies curriculum includes expecations that incorporate media and digital literacy skills. The document Canadian and World Studies (2013) includes a section that demonstrates the complementary relationship between the critical thinking of media education and Canadian and World Studies:
