In 2016, British Columbia launched a new Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies curriculum which it describes as “an experiential, hands-on program of learning through design and creation that includes skills and concepts from traditional and First Peoples practice; from the existing disciplines of Business Education, Home Economics and Culinary Arts, Information and Communication Technology, and Technology Education; and from new and emerging fields. It fosters the development of the skills and knowledge that will support students in developing practical, creative, and innovative responses to everyday needs and challenges.”

The British Columbia Career Education curriculum includes a number of media and digital literacy expectations in both the Curricular Competencies and Content, particularly relating to the Personal Development and Connections to Community strands.

The British Columbia Mathematics curriculum has a number of expectations relating to digital and media literacy, primarily in connection with financial literacy and probability. Select a grade level under Mathematics for a list of media-related outcomes and links to supporting resources from the MediaSmarts site. (Note: as many of our lessons can be adapted to suit different grade levels, specific lessons may be listed for more than one grade.

The Manitoba Mathematics curriculum includes digital and media literacy expectations at several grade levels, mostly in connection with an representations of probability and statistics in the media.

The Manitoba science curriculum states that “science is shaped by historical, political, economic, environmental, and societal factors” and that “scientific literacy equips learners to critically engage with information, make informed decisions, and address complex issues on both personal and societal levels.” Digital and media literacy expectations are mostly found in the Practical Science and Nature of Science strands.

The Prince Edward Island Mathematics curriculum includes curriculum expectations relating to recognizing and correcting for bias and the portrayal of probability and statistics in media.

The Saskatchewan Mathematics curriculum includes several courses with curriculum expectations that relate to digital and media literacy, primarily involving media representations of statistics and probability.

This public awareness program, created in partnership between MediaSmarts and the Facebook Canadian Election Integrity Initiative, focuses on authentication of online information.
