English Language Arts 7-9 Overview

Each Atlantic Province follows closely the Atlantic Provinces Education Foundation Framework for English Language Arts. In this Framework, media literacy is integrated throughout the English Language Arts curriculum under the general learning outcomes of Speaking and Listening, Reading and Viewing and Writing and Other Ways of Representing.

The following excerpt from Atlantic Canada English Language Arts Curriculum, Grades 7-9, details how media education has been integrated into the Atlantic curriculum.

English Language Arts K-9 Overview

In the Saskatchewan elementary English Language Arts curriculum, media-related objectives are provided under foundational objectives for speaking, listening, writing, reading, and representing and viewing.

English Language Arts 10-12

The Newfoundland language arts curriculum includes expectations that incorporate media education themes. The curriculum document English Language Arts Grades 10-12 Overview (2001) includes a section that demonstrates the complementary relationship between media literacy and English language arts:

Today’s students live in an information and entertainment culture that is dominated by images, both moving and static.

English Language Arts 9-12 Overview

Like the elementary English Language Arts curriculum, secondary level media-related objectives can be found in foundational outcomes for speaking, listening, writing, reading, and viewing and representing.

Digital Media Literacy Workshops for the new Ontario Language Curriculum

MediaSmarts is excited to offer two free virtual digital media literacy professional workshops for educators thanks to funding from the Ontario Ministry of Education. These two new professional development workshops were developed to support the updated Grade 1-9 Language Curriculum in Ontario.

English Language Arts K-4 Overview

At the elementary level in Manitoba, media-related objectives can be found in foundational outcomes for speaking, listening, writing, reading, and, most frequently, under viewing and representing.

At the elementary level in Manitoba, media-related objectives can be found in foundational outcomes for speaking, listening, writing, reading, and, most frequently, under viewing and representing.

English Language Arts 10-12 Overview

Media Education in the English Language Arts Curriculum, Grades 10-12

Media outcomes are integrated throughout the English Language Arts 10-12 curriculum. In addition to including media texts as part of listening and speaking, reading and writing, and viewing and representing outcomes, the curriculum broadens and more clearly defines text and context to reflect media culture.

Health for Life 11

In the Ontario Grade 11 Health for Life curriculum, media literacy outcomes are included under the broader categories Determinants of Health and Community Health.

On the left you will find the outcome chart containing media-related learning expectations from the Health for Life curriculum, with links to supporting resources on the MediaSmarts site. Teachers should also note that individual lessons often satisfy a number of expectations.
