Creative, Connected and Collaborative: Media Literacy Week 2014 to focus on youth and social networking

Ottawa (May 7, 2014) - MediaSmarts and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF) are pleased to announce that the theme for Canada’s ninth annual Media Literacy Week (November 3-7, 2014) will focus on the positive uses of social networking by young people.

“Digital natives” turn to parents and teachers for digital literacy skills, new study finds

Ottawa, ON (March 31, 2014) – Canadian youth are not as digitally literate as adults may think they are, according to new research released today by MediaSmarts. Though today’s young people have grown up immersed in digital media, they still rely on parents and teachers to help them advance their skills in areas such as searching and verifying online information.

More than anything else in media, news coverage influences what people and which issues are part of the national conversation and how those issues are talked about.[1] When it comes to Indigenous people and communities, constitutional issues, forest fires, poverty, sexual abuse and drug addiction sometimes appear to be the only topics are reported in the news.

OTTAWA – Media Literacy Week kicks off today and runs until Friday, raising awareness about the need to create inclusive digital communities.

Help! Someone shared a photo of me without my consent! – Tip Sheet

  1. You can start by asking the person who shared it to take it down or stop sharing it. Kids report that this works more often than not!
  2. Ask the service or platform where it was shared to take it down. If you’re under 18, they may be required by law to take it down, and most also have a policy of taking down any photos that were shared without the subject’s permission.

Canada's Prosperity will Suffer Without Federal Support for Digital Literacy

July 7, 2010 (Ottawa) – Canada's leading digital literacy organization, Media Awareness Network (MNet), is sounding the alarm that Canada will continue to trail other countries in productivity and innovation unless a national plan for digital literacy is put in place.

New findings from Young Canadians in a Wired World study:

OTTAWA, May 29, 2012- A new Canadian report highlights a dramatic shift in views toward the Internet, and a remarkable dichotomy between children and parents. The report, titled “Talking to Youth and Parents about Life Online”, is part of an ongoing study – Young Canadians in a Wired World. It is the most comprehensive investigation into the role of the Internet in the lives of Canadian children.

New Tools Launched To Encourage Media Literacy and Support National Media Education Week

Ottawa, October 10, 2006 - Media Awareness Network (MNet) and the Canadian Teachers' Federation (CTF) today launched new tools to promote media education and support Canada's first National Media Education Week. The new tools include an extensive Web site, a media education blog and professional development materials for educators.
