English Language Arts 7-9 Overview

In Prince Edward Island, “English language arts encompasses the experience, study, and appreciation of language, literature, media, and communication.” The curriculum defines a text as “any language event, whether oral, written, visual, or digital. In this sense, a conversation, a poem, a novel, an online exchange, a poster, a music video, or a multimedia production are all considered texts.

Language 4-6

Digital Media Literacy in Language 4-6

The Language grades 4-6 curriculum released in 2023 is based in part on the principle that “a modern English curriculum reflects emerging technologies and their impact on communication and digital media literacy,” which is defined as combining “the ability to combine the multimodal properties of media literacy with the technological capabilities of digital literacy.”

Language 7-8

Digital Media Literacy in Language 7-8

The Language grades 7-8 curriculum released in 2023 is based in part on the principle that “a modern English curriculum reflects emerging technologies and their impact on communication and digital media literacy,” which is defined as combining “the ability to combine the multimodal properties of media literacy with the technological capabilities of digital literacy.”

Language 1-3

Digital Media Literacy in Language 1-3

New Brunswick - Creative Arts 9 to 12

In the High School Block, “the concepts Create, Connect and Communicate are central to learning in and through creative arts.” Learners at this level “develop confidence as performers and creators; develop understanding of the role of the arts in society and its power to effect change [and] practice respect for varying opinions and tastes.”

Visual Arts 3 to 5

In the Elementary Block, Visual Arts students “develop the ability to collaborate and can respectfully share ideas and impressions of artwork created by others” and learn that “their art is an expression of their experience, ideas, and identity.” Students “Experiment with a variety of genres and technologies, develop skills to support making art in a specific medium,” and “connect the ways visual art is important to communication, history and understanding each other.”

Visual Arts 6-8

Science 6-8 Overview

Science learners in the Middle Block “apply critical thinking and scientific literacy to their investigations” and “transfer science and technological understandings to situational contexts.” Digital media literacy connections at this level are found in the Scientific Literacy strand.

Science 9-12

Science courses in the High School Block “prepare students to hypothesize; inquire, pursue, acquire, and apply knowledge about the physical and natural world; be curious; plan, create and action change; apply a systematic methodology based on scientific evidence and grounded in observation and experimentation; [and] find problems and make decisions by critical evaluation of evidence and applying knowledge and evidence to novel situations.”

Personal Wellness 6-8

In the Middle Block, students “examine their own personal health and how their choices and habits impact personal wellness. They learn the importance of making meaningful connections with their peers while respecting individual choices, lifestyles, and beliefs. Learners examine social, emotional, and cognitive changes associated with adolescence and how those choices impact relationships, personal safety, and mental health.”
