Equal Voice and Media Awareness Network launch lessons to combat gender inequality in politics

Ottawa, June 2, 2009 – Media Equal Voice in partnership with Media Awareness Network (MNet) today launched bilingual lessons for students in Grades 7-12 that explore media representation of gender in politics. Students from Glashan Intermediate School, in Ottawa, had the opportunity to try out the lessons.

The lessons are part of the Experiences project, initiated by Equal Voice which aims to engage young women in politics at all levels of government. A key component of the project is identifying and sensitizing young women to gender bias in media.

Students across Quebec learn lessons in online privacy at launch of Media Literacy Week 2012

Montreal, December 4, 2012 – Laurier Macdonald High School in St. Leonard joined with schools across Quebec at an event to launch Media Literacy Week 2012. Students had the opportunity to talk with a panel of experts about online privacy as part of this year’s theme Privacy Matters.

Kids Deconstruct Alcohol Advertising Through New Media Education Program

Ottawa, September 26, 2005 – Media Awareness Network (MNet) today launched The Target Is You! – a new national education program for youth on alcohol advertising. This series of 10 lessons is designed to help young people understand the significant social and psychological effects of messages in alcohol advertising in influencing their attitudes about drinking.

MediaSmarts Launches New Online Course for Teachers

OTTAWA – MediaSmarts, Canada’s not-for-profit centre for digital literacy, has launched a new free, self-directed online course for in-service and pre-service teachers and other educators. Making Media Across the Curriculum will provide training and resources to incorporate digital media production such as games, film, and animation in their classrooms from kindergarten to Grade 12 and across the curriculum.

Kids learn to defend their data with new privacy game

OTTAWA, March 28, 2018 – A new game is coming to Canadian classrooms and homes, designed not just to entertain children but also to teach them how to protect their privacy. Data Defenders, produced by the not-for-profit digital literacy organization MediaSmarts, shows kids how ad brokers try to collect their personal information and offers strategies to keep that information private.

MediaSmarts launches new resources for classrooms and homes in recognition of Media Literacy Week

Ottawa, ON (November 4, 2013) – MediaSmarts, Canada’s centre for digital and media literacy, recognized the start of Canada’s 8th annual Media Literacy Week with the release of a series of new resources and activities for parents, teachers, children and youth.

The week, which runs from November 4 to 8, is hosted by MediaSmarts and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF). Activities are taking place across Canada to recognize the importance of media and digital literacy skills for young people.

New platform helps youth push back when they see hate online

MediaSmarts announces today the release of My Voice is Louder Than Hate, a new resource that uses digital storytelling and meme-making tools to encourage youth to push back when they encounter hate online. 

New interactive game helps kids understand privacy policies and terms of use

Ottawa (March 31, 2016) –To help young people make informed decisions when going online, MediaSmarts, Canada's centre for digital and media literacy, has launched a new educational game, Click if You Agree. The game teaches teens and preteens the skills they need to read and understand the legal policies on websites and in software they use. 

“Break the Fake”: Media Literacy Week starts today, promoting fact-checking and stopping the spread of misinformation

MediaSmarts and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF) are today launching Media Literacy Week (October 7 to 11) with teachers and students, libraries and museums, and community groups across the country engaging in activities that encourage Canadians to “Break the Fake” and check information they see online before sharing it. 

Those tiny hippos in your house? They’re back to teach us about ‘fake news’

They’re cute, they steal your socks, they ride your robot vacuum… and they’re back to help us remember to not believe everything we see online. The house hippo who stole our hearts in a public service announcement in 1999 has come back to Break the Fake in a new campaign from MediaSmarts, Canada’s centre for digital and media literacy.
