English Language Arts Grades 10-12

In Prince Edward Island, “English language arts encompasses the experience, study, and appreciation of language, literature, media, and communication.” The curriculum defines a text as “any language event, whether oral, written, visual, or digital. In this sense, a conversation, a poem, a novel, an online exchange, a poster, a music video, or a multimedia production are all considered texts.

Digital media literacy workshop delivery


MediaSmarts’ experts are available to facilitate virtual and in-person workshops in school and community settings for parents/guardians, educators, youth and the general public. Our workshops cover topics such as online safety, misinformation, digital well-being, managing tech in the home, diversity and representation in media, digital citizenship, critical thinking, online hate and more.

Social Studies K-12

In the Atlantic Canada Social Studies Framework, media literacy outcomes are included under the broader categories of Citizenship, Power and Governance; Groups and Institutions; Culture and Cultural Diversity; Individual Development and Identity; Global Connections; Individuals, Societies and Economic Choices; Participating in Social Studies; and People, Science and Technology.

Social Studies Overview

Many curricular expectations in Newfoundland and Labrador Social Studies courses relate to media and digital literacy. Media and digital literacy skills can be found in General Curriculum Outcomes such as Citizenship, Power and Governance; Culture and Diversity; Individuals, Societies, and Economic Decisions; People, Place and Environment; and Time, Continuity and Change.

English Language Arts 10-12

The Newfoundland language arts curriculum includes expectations that incorporate media education themes. The curriculum document English Language Arts Grades 10-12 Overview (2001) includes a section that demonstrates the complementary relationship between media literacy and English language arts:

Today’s students live in an information and entertainment culture that is dominated by images, both moving and static.

Career Education

The Newfoundland career education curriculum includes expectations that incorporate media education themes. The curriculum document Career Development Intermediate (2012) includes a section that demonstrates the complementary relationship between media literacy and career education:

Why Teach Digital Media Literacy?

Today's definition of literacy is more than reading and writing. In order to be functionally literate in our media-saturated world, children and young people—in fact, all of us—have to be able to read the messages that daily inform us, entertain us and sell to us. Media literacy education, therefore, must begin long before children become print literate to prepare them to critically engage with the media they consume.

English as a Second Language Overview

In Ontario, media components are included in the English as a Second Language curriculum in the Social-Cultural Competence and Media Literacy strand. The document English as a Second Language and English Literacy Development (2007) identifies four overall expectations in this strand:
