The Northwest Territories Department of Education, Culture and Employment adheres to the WNCP's Framework for Arts Education which contains a strong media education component. For Grades 1 to 9, the department follows the Saskatchewan curriculum for Arts Education.
Framed around key concepts of media literacy, the That’s Not Me tutorial examines how entertainment and news media represent diversity and the impact these media portrayals can have on the value we place on individuals and groups in society.
We conduct qualitative and quantitative community-based research projects; design and facilitate program and resource evaluation; and mobilize the findings and recommendations from our research - all in collaboration with various community and academic partners.
Young Canadians in a Wireless World (YCWW) – formerly known as Young Canadians in Wired World – is Canada’s longest running, and most comprehensive research study on young people’s attitudes and behaviours regarding the internet, surveying over 20,000 parents, teachers, and students since 2000.
Through a community-based research approach, our projects honour participants’ diverse range of digital media literacy strengths, experiences and expertise. We design projects that create safe spaces for participants to share their thoughts, experiences, concerns and solutions about digital media literacy issues. We aim to empower participants by providing them with knowledge and skills that they can take with them as they continue to navigate the online world and digital technology.
Looking for creative ways to integrate digital media literacy activities into your teaching practice? We've developed this calendar of special awareness days for educators to easily pinpoint opportunities to explore a variety of digital media issues while recognizing commemorative events throughout the school year. We've linked each awareness day to a list of free K-12 lesson plans, tip sheets and more teaching resources.
