About Us

In this section, you can find...

Welcome to the MediaSmarts’ website, home to one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of digital and media literacy resources. This section is intended to introduce you to our organization and our work.

MediaSmarts is a Canadian not-for-profit charitable organization for digital and media literacy. Our vision is that children and youth have the critical thinking skills to engage with media as active and informed digital citizens.

MediaSmarts has been developing digital and media literacy programs and resources for Canadian homes, schools and communities since 1996. Through our work we support adults with information and tools so they can help children and teens develop the critical thinking skills they need for interacting with the media they love.

MediaSmarts (formerly known as Media Awareness Network) came out of a TV violence initiative launched by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in the early 1990s.

For over 15 years MediaSmarts has been producing award-winning resources and programs. This section looks at the recognition we have received for our work.

MediaSmarts is governed by an elected, volunteer Board of Directors, which includes representatives of leading media companies and stakeholder sectors, including education, libraries, and community and youth-serving organizations.

We are honoured that His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, became the Patron of our newly re-branded organization in August 2012.

MediaSmarts’ ability to deliver high-quality programs and resources is based on the expertise and dedication of the dynamic group of professionals listed here.

MediaSmarts’ strength lies in its large network of partners and collaborators.

MediaSmarts is privileged to have the support of many dedicated companies and organizations who believe in our mission and share our commitment to helping children and teens become media smart. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the companies and organizations who are supporting our work.
